Atlanta, October 19, 2010 — Landis+Gyr and SafeNet announced they have signed a reseller agreement to integrate SafeNet’s Luna Hardware Security Module into Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream end-to-end security architecture, creating a highly secure environment to exchange and store utilities’ sensitive cryptographic keys in a trusted hardware device. With the Gridstream solution for smart metering, utility companies and consumers can gain increased insight into energy consumption through multi-energy metering and network management technologies. To ensure the integrity of the information being transferred, and guard it against malicious attacks or vulnerabilities, there must be a system in place to authenticate, protect and store information.
With Gridstream and SafeNet’s Luna HSM encryption technologies, there is trusted integrity in the grid, consumer and enterprise privacy is protected, and utility fraud is prevented. SafeNet HSMs are the trust anchor for the Gridstream solution — acting as a single point of protection for safeguarding the cryptographic key against attack. In addition, the Luna HSM complies with the highest security standards, such as Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 and Common Criteria EAL 4+, and provides utilities with a validated and tamper-resistant hardware solution that supports overall smart grid security. Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream RF technology uses a powerful radio mesh network to communicate with meters and distribution devices, such as monitors and switches. Gridstream devices use the Smart Energy Profile standard to communicate with smart appliances and in-home units. This technology is currently being deployed to millions of residential and commercial sites across the U.S.
