The Wi-Fi Alliance and the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, both members of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, announced on Tuesday that they will work together on applications that enable smart energy grids to interoperate with "connected" homes. The Smart Grid Interoperability Panel coordinates smart grid standards. The two groups will be collaborating on wireless and wired network applications for what the forum refers to as Smart Energy 2 Applications Profile.
With HomePlug’s assistance, the Wi-Fi Alliance believes that it will be able mesh Wi-Fi equipment and devices connected to home powerline networks. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance CEO Edgar Figueroa, the focus of this collaboration is on helping to bring about "a great user experience with smart home technology."
8,000 products have been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance so far, while HomePlug has provided specifications used in 60 million devices, including HomePlug AV, a device for plugging an adapter into a home wall power outlet. The adapter also has an Ethernet port for connecting to a computer. In another room, another adapter can be connected to the computer in the same way, enabling powerline networking between the two computers at 85 Mb/sec. The alliance is also developing an AV2 broadband specification that is expected to be completed early next year. This device will increase the data transfer capability to 600 Mb/sec over home powerlines.
Another specification is The HomePlug GreenPhy, utilized for smart meters and small appliances such as thermostats to enable data transfer between a home area network and a utility.
The Wi-Fi Alliance is a global non-profit organization founded in 1999 by many visionary leaders for the purpose of driving adoption of a single worldwide standard for high-speed wireless local area networking. At present the Wi-Fi Alliance has over 300 companies from dozens of countries.
Wi-Fi Alliance has the mission of delivering the best user experience through certification of products enabled with Wi-Fi technology; growing the Wi-Fi market across market segments and geographies, on different types of devices; developing market-enabling programs; and supporting industry-agreed standards and specifications.
In 2000, the Wi-Fi CERTIFIEDTM program was launched. This program offers a designation of interoperability and quality, and helps in ensuring that Wi-Fi enabled products provide the best user experience.
The HomePlug Alliance consists of industry leaders at all levels of the value chain. Its mission is enabling and promoting rapid availability, adoption and implementation of home powerline networks and products that are standards-based, interoperable, and cost effective.
