Japan's smart grid initiatives will get a boost from a joint venture between GE and Fuji Electric Holdings Co., Ltd. Together, the companies will design, build, market and service a new generation of smart meter technology for Japanese utilities involved in the country's smart grid rollout. GE brings its smart meter technology and decades of experience working with Japan's utilities to the table, and Fuji Electric offers its well-established Japan-based manufacturing and sales network. The objective is to bring quality, cost-effective meters to the country. "GE's smart meter technology provides the precision, accuracy and networked communications technology Japan utilities seek as they look to implement smart grid technologies to improve efficiency and reliability," said Luke Clemente, general manager, metering and sensing systems–digital energy for GE Energy Services. Not only will the advanced smart meters contribute to the grid's efficiency and reliability, they also will make it easier to integrate power from renewable energy sources.
